Second Weekend of Volunteering

Volunteer Staff:
Manager: Nichole (rotation of two months) Knows a lot about Itasca, used to attend school at the University of Minnesota. Suggested that I take both Ornithology courses. Prefers amazons to other birds.
Robert - Lorrie and macaw rooms. well-liked by Bobby
Laurie - tiel room.
Inta - big bird room.
Me - Washing dishes, detailed the big bird room. Fed and watered the birds, spot cleaning.

Flock Members:
Sam - male - E2 - Eleanora Cockatoo - Sam is blind, he enjoys rattle toys and will bite anything that brushes past him so be careful with your legs.
Peaches - male - M2 - Moluccan Cockatoo - Peaches was found outside and Jamie captured him by grabbing his head so he is very wary of people touching his head. Enjoys telling stories and washing dishes. Likes to be sung too. Followed me around trying to bite my shoe when I was spot cleaning. According to Inta, he is an "attention whore" and has learned bad habits from the other birds at the landing.
Bongo Bob - male - (?) Cockatoo - One of the more emotionally unstable birds. He enjoys throwing toys in the air for you to catch and will throw them at the people he wants to play with. Bongo Bob will attempt to cuddle you and then snap and bite you when you least expect it. Bongo Bob actually killed one of the old Moluccans at the landing. He says his name a lot.
Bobby - male - (?) Cockatoo - Prefers men, is well-motivated by treats. He was originally denied a spot at MAARS until the owner decided to leave him at the front door of the landing.
Miranda - male - Doesn't like to be called Randy. Great escape artist. Will fight with Eldo.
Eldo - male - cockatoo - Is Shana's boyfriend and is very aggressive towards other birds.
Big Louie
Carly - M2 - blind on one side because s/he? is missing an eye. One of the other birds bit it off but I can't remember who. Bongo Bob?
Murphy - smaller bird
Phillipe - pretends to be really sweet and then likes to bite. Gets jealous easily.
Sputnik - apparently likes me a lot, although he kept trying to bite me while we were washing dishes together. I gave him a hair tie to play with and he had a great time destroying it. Peaches and Sputnik both enjoy eating soap bubbles in the sink. "Sputters" was cuddled by Inta like a little baby and loved it! He also liked drinking water from the tap and being splashed to take a bath.
Malachi - male - M2 - my little sweetheart. He likes eating whole bananas from other people but prefers mushed bananas when I feed him. This weekend he ate all of his banana-apple-sauce-medicine cocktail by eating it off my finger. I mushed it up for him. Very quiet and shy, likes to surprise you by sweetly saying "hellooo." He would sneak up on me and stick his head right by my ear and say Hello.
Cowboy - male - M2 - loves hearing new noises and copying them. Runs around the Landing whistling and looking for someone to play with. He is a special friend to me.
Prince Charming - male - amazon - likes young women and whistled at me.
Gomer - male - macaw - still doesn't like me. He tried to bite Robert, too. Nichole trusts him the most out of all the birds in the big bird room because he is the most "human."
Peanut - macaw - still very shy around me. Was kept in a cage for ten years.

Other things I learned:
* Amazons bite and twist to break the skin
* Cockatoos typically leave painful bruises
* Introduce yourself to the birds by first touching their back and then you can touch their head if they let you.

Notable Occurrences:
* Laurie was attacked by one of the goffins in the back room. She was bitten behind her ear and bled a lot but was actually okay.
* Ed flew at me to let me know that I am not welcome in the Macaw room when he is out. He is not very friendly when he is out of his cage but he is willing to be pet on his head when he is in his cage.

Other:
I didn't mind washing the dishes because I had company (Peaches and Sputnik). I am supposed to keep the dishes to each room together but I didn't do that this time. Wash, rinse and spray with avitec.
